One of the most recognizable figures in the American Saab scene, Robert Sinclair, passed away May 10th at his Santa Barabra, California, home. Sinclair served as the head of Saab-Scania USA during the company's high point, from 1979 to 1991.

In the decade-plus under Sinclair, Saab's image - not just Stateside but also throughout the world - moved more upmarket. Much credit goes to projects he championed, such as the 900 Convertible and the 900 Turbo SPG. He was also a major proponent of the 9000 model. Without Sinclair's insistence that Saab become more of a premium carmaker, the Swedes might have followed Volkswagen as a builder of small economy cars. robert_sinclair_400.jpg

Sinclair was an unusual executive in that he understood and appreciated the enthusiasts that gave Saab its unique identity. In the years during his tenure, and especially in retirement, Robert Sinclair was a fixture at Saab owners' conventions throughout the country. Perhaps Saab's next owners will take a lesson from Mr. Sinlcair's book, but it's safe to say he was a rarity even in his day.

Sinclair had been battling cancer for the last three years. He is survived by his wife and six children. He will be missed by many.
