After months of intense dealings and arrangements, the Koenigsegg Group has reportedly pulled out of the deal to buy Saab Automobile from General Motors. That leaves the Chinese firm Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Corporation (BAIC) as the only active buyer at the moment.
In a brief statement issued by GM this morning, the company said it will have to reevaluate the sale of the brand. "We're obviously very disappointed with the decision to pull out of the Saab purchase," said GM President and CEO, Fritz Henderson. "Many have worked tirelessly over the past several months to create a sustainable plan for the future of Saab by selling the brand and its manufacturing interests to Koenigsegg Group AB. Given the sudden change in direction, we will take the next several days to assess the situation and will advise on the next steps next week."
Reading between the lines, it sounds as if the sale is less attractive with just the Chinese firm as a buyer. Complicating matters is the fact that BAIC has already announced plans to build and sell the outgoing Saab 9-5 in China beginning next year.
